Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could release from your life all the thoughts, beliefs, vibes, clutter, relationships and situations that are no longer serving your highest good?
Guess what? You can!
I release these things each month as part of my full moon ritual. I cleanse and charge my crystals in the moonlight. Then I take a few moments to be thankful for all that’s been given to me while allowing the moon and universe to take back anything that’s no longer useful in my life.
The best part? There’s really no right or wrong way to release what no longer serves you. I’m providing 5 full moon ritual ideas below as a guide to get your creative juices flowing. But, trust your intuition! Do what feels right for YOU.
If one of the rituals below resonates with you… great! If not, listen to your gut and let it guide you in creating your own personal way of letting go. Or if you’d like more ideas, follow my “Everything Full Moon” Pinterest board below.

Have a heart-to-heart with the moon
What you will need:
- Yourself
- Ability to see the full moon in the sky
This simple ritual is one of the easiest ways to release what no longer serves you during the full moon. It involves stepping outside under the full moon’s light to have a chat with the moon. Yep that’s right… you simply talk to the moon!
You may wish to stand (or sit) in an area where you can see the moon but your neighbors can’t see you (unless you don’t mind them seeing you talk to the moon). Although it’s best to perform this ritual outside under the moon, you may also do it from inside a house, looking out a window at the moon.
This ritual is very simple yet can be extremely powerful. The last time I used this method, I thanked the moon and the universe for all the blessings they had sent my way. Then I mentioned all the things that weren’t working in my life, adding that I wished to release them. I asked the moon to take those things from me. My body began to tingle and the sensation intensified. It felt as if the moon was pulling out of me everything that no longer served me. It was an intense experience that proves (at least to me!) that you don’t need fancy tools to release negative things from your life.
Release by candle
What you will need:
This is a great ritual for people who’d rather not write anything down. You can use a candle created especially for release, like the beautiful intention candles by Sage Goddess, a full moon candle, or you can use a plain white candle.
Find a quiet spot to sit with your candle, preferably outside under the full moon. If that’s not possible, perform the ritual indoors in a space where you won’t be disturbed.
Take a few deeps breaths to ground yourself. You may wish to surround yourself in a protective bubble of white light. Then light your candle. Gaze into the flame and say aloud everything you wish to release from your life. Take your time and feel your body, mind and soul getting lighter as you speak the words.
When you are ready, blow out the candle. This gesture is symbolic. You are extinguishing not only the flame, but also everything that’s no longer working for your higher good.
Bury a crystal or stone
What you will need:
One of my personal favorites, this ritual involves writing what no longer serves you on a crystal or stone and then burying it in the earth. This ritual works best if there is only one thing you’d like to release, because there is usually limited space on the stone!
I like to use black obsidian because its energy supports the whole process of letting go. Also, the stone is black so if you use a black marker, I always feel like whatever I’m releasing begins to disappear as soon as the marker touches the stone. Of course, you may also use whatever stone you can find in your yard or wherever you may be performing the ritual. (The stone pictured at right is prehnite, which I used a few months ago and marked with an abbreviation during this ritual.)
After you mark the stone with what you wish to release, bury it in the earth in a spot where it won’t be disturbed. As you dig a hole, place the stone in it and then cover it with the earth, tell yourself that you are burying [whatever it is you would like to release] for good and that you will no longer allow it your energy.
TIP: If you’d rather not write on the stone, hold the crystal in your closed hand and visualize all the thoughts, feelings and stress of whatever no longer serves you, releasing into the crystal. Through your intention, put all that unwanted energy into the stone. Visualize it leaving your body and entering the crystal. Once you feel like all that energy is in the crystal, bury it as indicated above.
Burn and release
What you will need:
- A piece of paper
- A pen
- A lighter
or candle
- An abalone shell or other fireproof receptacle
This ritual works especially well for visual people, and for times when you have many things you’d like to release from your life.
Use a pen and paper to write down everything that no longer serves you, no matter how big or small it is. You’ve got a full sheet of paper… use it! Get it off your chest and on that paper.
Then burn the paper! Put the piece of paper in –or hold it over — an abalone shell or other fireproof receptacle to burn. Please be sure the shell is on a fireproof surface away from anything that could burn. And it should go without saying, but never leave burning/smoldering paper unattended!
As you watch the paper burn, visualize everything you listed on that paper burning away and leaving your life… for good!
Release through art
What you will need:
- An art journal
- Craft paint
- Makeup wedges
or a paint brush
- Pen or marker
This is a super fun and therapeutic ritual for crafty folks. Don’t have an arty bone in your body? No worries! You can still create art with this easy and visual method of releasing what no longer serves you.
Start with some craft paint and an art journal or canvas. I personally love and use Dyan Reaveley’s Dylusions Creative Journal
. Although a bit pricey, this journal has nice heavyweight pages that can withstand wet paint, Mod Podge
and other crafty materials and add ons. If you will be performing this ritual only once, feel free to use whatever paper you already have on hand. Get creative with your materials!
Using a pen or marker, write down on a journal page all the things that are no longer serving you in your life. You can write it in the style of a list, or get creative and sketch what you’d like to release. Be honest with yourself here. No one is going to see what you write.
After jotting down what’s no longer serving you, open the paint and channel your inner artist! Paint over your words — completely covering them — using a makeup wedge or traditional paint brush. I love using the wedges in lieu of a brush since I usually smudge, smear and swirl the paint on the paper rather than paint an image, but the preference is yours! I also like to leave some of the words peeking through the paint so you can still see words (but not read what they say)… again, the choice is yours. As you paint over the words, visual those things disappearing from your life.
Allow the paint to dry. This can be the end of your ritual, or you may wish to embellish the page a bit more by drawing on the dried paint using markers, or create a vision board out of the page by using Mod Podge to glue images of happy places, dreams and goals for your life.
